Point Spread Betting Explained


A point spread bet "handicaps" the favorite by a number of points to create a roughly 50/50 proposition. It's the most popular bet type in NFL and NBA betting — and the foundation of most sports betting strategy.

How the Spread Works

Each side has a number — favorites are listed with a minus (–), underdogs with a plus (+). The favorite must win by more than the spread; the underdog can lose by less than the spread (or win outright) to cover.

Oregon Example: Trail Blazers –4.5 vs. Suns

Suppose the Portland Trail Blazers host the Phoenix Suns. DraftKings posts:

  • Blazers –4.5 (–110) — Portland must win by 5+ to cover
  • Suns +4.5 (–110) — Phoenix can win, or lose by 4 or fewer

A $110 bet on either side wins $100 if the side covers. If the final is Blazers 112 – Suns 108, Portland wins by 4 — the Suns +4.5 ticket cashes.

The Half-Point and Key Numbers

Spreads ending in .5 (e.g., –4.5, +6.5) eliminate the possibility of a push (tie). Whole-number spreads can push — your stake is returned. In the NFL, the most common margins of victory are 3 and 7; in the NBA, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 are key numbers. Crossing a key number — buying a half-point to move from –3 to –2.5, for example — costs extra juice but can meaningfully shift win probability.

Asian Handicap (Soccer)

Soccer in Oregon — including Portland Timbers matches — typically uses Asian handicap spreads with quarter-goal increments (e.g., –0.25, –0.75) that split your stake into two portions to reduce push risk. A "–0.5 / –1.0" line means half your bet is on –0.5 and half on –1.0.

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring the half-point on key numbers — a Blazers –3 vs –3.5 difference in the NBA is small; in the NFL, it's massive
  • Auto-fading the public — public consensus is sometimes right; reverse line movement is a better fade signal than ticket count
  • Forgetting the vig — –110 means you need to win 52.4% just to break even
  • Not adjusting for weather/injuries — late-week injury news on NFL Sundays moves NFL spreads more than any other factor
