DraftKings vs FanDuel — Oregon Edition

In most US states, DraftKings and FanDuel are the two largest sportsbooks competing head-to-head. In Oregon, only DraftKings operates online — FanDuel has no presence in the state. This page explains why, and what that means for bettors who've used FanDuel elsewhere.

Why FanDuel Isn't in Oregon

Oregon operates a single-operator state monopoly for online sports betting through the Oregon Lottery. The Lottery contracts one commercial sportsbook to run the platform — currently DraftKings, previously SBTech (2019–2022). There is no second slot for FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, or anyone else to compete online.

FanDuel could theoretically operate retail sportsbooks at Oregon tribal casinos (similar to how BetMGM operates at Spirit Mountain and Caesars at The Mill), but to date no tribe has signed a FanDuel partnership. So FanDuel's effective presence in Oregon is zero.

FanDuel's Presence Elsewhere

FanDuel operates in 20+ US states with online sports betting, often as the market leader by handle. It's the largest online sportsbook in the United States by gross gaming revenue in most quarters. The fact that FanDuel cannot enter Oregon is purely a structural feature of the state's Lottery framework — not a reflection of FanDuel's business decisions.

What Oregon Bettors Miss

FanDuel-specific features Oregon bettors don't have access to:

  • FanDuel's same-game parlay engine — generally considered the most polished in the industry
  • Wider promo budgets in competitive states (FanDuel typically spends heavily on customer acquisition)
  • FanDuel TV integration with live programming
  • FanDuel Racing (horse racing) — separate product available in some states

The DraftKings Advantage in Oregon

The flip side: because DraftKings has no competition for online customers in Oregon, it doesn't have to fight for retention with aggressive promotions. The $200 welcome offer is the smallest DraftKings runs in any state. On the positive side, DraftKings' product is well-developed:

  • Industry-leading same-game parlay variety (catching up to FanDuel)
  • Deep live betting markets
  • Robust prop coverage
  • Strong UX on both iOS and Android

Could FanDuel Ever Enter Oregon?

Possible paths:

  • Tribal partnership: A tribe could choose FanDuel as its retail brand (as Spirit Mountain chose BetMGM)
  • Legislative change: Oregon would have to abandon the Lottery monopoly model — politically very unlikely given the ~51% revenue share to the state
  • Next contract cycle: When DraftKings' Lottery contract expires, FanDuel could theoretically bid — but the Lottery typically renews single-operator

For practical purposes, Oregon bettors should expect DraftKings to remain the only online option for the foreseeable future.
